Bruno Freitas

Application & Systems Integration Engineer

Piteira Research Group

Bruno Freitas is an Application and Systems Integration Engineer working in the Piteira group at INL. His interests span the design of biomedical devices, robotics and software development. The current focus is on the mechanical design of microfluidic devices, such as an integrated device for bacteria and AMR genes detection using biosensors. His responsibilities include 3D modelling of the microfluidic chip housing and biosensor supports, using Computer-Aided Design (CAD), as well as manufacturing components through fibre laser and CNC machining via Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM).

Bruno holds an MSc in Biomedical Engineering and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minho. His journey includes research roles at several institutions: the Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA) in 2015, INL in 2016, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) during his Master’s studies in 2017, and the Centre for Microelectromechanical Systems (CMEMS). In 2025, he rejoined INL to contribute to cutting-edge research in biomedical and microfluidic device design.
