Facility Engineer

Electron Microscopy and X-Rays Facility

Francisco Figueiredo is a Facility Engineer at the Electron Microscopy and X-Rays Facility at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL). He is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of INL’s electron microscopy equipment, supporting researchers and external users in acquiring high-quality data. He provides hands-on training on different microscopes and contributes to ensure the smooth daily operation of the facility.

Francisco holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto (Portugal), where he specialised in electron microscopy and structural biology. During his PhD, he completed an EMBO Scientific Exchange Grant at the University of Helsinki to perform cryo-EM. As a postdoc, he was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action postdoctoral fellowship to work in Prof. Schur’s group at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), combining cryo-FIB-SEM, cryo-ET, and cryo-CLEM to develop a full cryo-EM pipeline for studying skin ultrastructure.
