INL signed Letter of Intent to strengthen collaboration with Argentina

March 13 – The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) signed a Letter of Intent to strengthen scientific collaboration with Argentina, in the area of Nanotechnology and Nanoscience. The agreement was signed in Buenos Aires by the Argentine Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCYT), Lino Barañao, and INL’s Director-General, Lars Montelius. The signing ceremony took place during the EU-Argentina Conference 10 years of Cooperation in Science, Technology and Productive Innovation. The agreement joins the Argentine Ministry of Science and Technical Research, the – National Council for Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET) and INL with the goal is to “promote joint activities to strengthen the scientific and technical cooperation” and “facilitate access to institutions of science, technology and innovation, researchers, students and companies” to INL facilities, in Braga (Portugal) and CIBION (Centro de Investigaciones en Bionanociencias – Research Center for Bionanosciences), Buenos Aires (Argentina), for the development of highly qualified human resources. INL hosted workshop on research and development of photovoltaics

European projections show that in 2050, 15% to 30% of all generated electricity will come from photovoltaics, making it a field of strategic interest for Portugal and Europe. Among others, this was one of the motivations for the workshop that took place Monday (9th of February) at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), in Braga. “Portugal has a very significant number of researchers working in different aspects of photovoltaics and this workshop was used to identify synergy opportunities between the groups. There is no doubt that this is a strategic sector for Portugal and for Europe”, said Pedro Salomé, a researcher from INL and co-organizer of the workshop that gathered over 40 photovoltaic specialists in Braga, Portugal. Along with researchers from INL and Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG), the other co-organising partner, the following institutions also participated: Universidade do Minho, Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Universidade de Aveiro, Universidade de Coimbra, Faculdade de Ciências e Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade de Lisboa and Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. INL researchers at NanoPT in Porto

A significant delegation of INL researchers will participate in this year’s edition of NanoPT. The international conference takes place in Porto from February 11th-13th. The 3rd edition will be held with the purpose of strengthening ties nationally and internationally in Nanotechnology and, intends to be a reference event in Portugal in forthcoming years. The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) opened a 4th call for its COFUND fellowship program for Postdocs– The NanoTRAINforGrowth Program. INL´s international postdoctoral fellowship offers successful applicants the opportunity to perform their innovative scientific project in one of the four attractive Scientific fields pursued at INL: Nanomedicine, Environmental and food control, Nanoelectronics and Nanomanipulation. i) Nanomedicine: point of care diagnostics (lab on chip microsystems, microfluidic platforms), DNA, protein and cell chips, biomolecular labels, drug delivery solutions, imaging, neuroelectronics. ii) Environmental and food control: Nanotechnology applied to Food industry, food safety and environmental control. Water and Soil control, air pollution monitoring. Lars Montelius is the new Director of INL

Lars Montelius is the new Director of INL

Lars Montelius took up his appointment as Director-General of INL, on September 1st. The Swedish Professor of Physics has spent more than 25 years working in the Nanotechnology field will lead the Laboratory founded by Portugal and Spain for the next five years. Before his appointment to INL, Lars Montelius held several positions in academia, among them Dean of the Physics Department of Lund University, and director for the Swedish Danish Collaborations, the Öresund University and the Öresund Science Region, where he worked on the development of cross-regional collaborations. During the last few years, he got strongly involved in innovation on the border between academia and business. Lately, he has put much effort into the innovation system and has been engaged as a mentor for students exploring ideas of innovation as well as being responsible for development projects with direction towards establishing a working model and concept to interface academia and society. Spin waves in bits observed for the first time

Image STM image of two artificial bits of seven iron atoms each: one vertically oriented (top) and one diagonally oriented (bottom left) Every time a bit on your hard disk drive is flipped, for a very short period, countless waves will propagate through the bit. These waves are known as spin waves. How spin waves exactly influence the flipping process is hard to determine. In a joint effort, researchers at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) together with colleges at TU Delft (the Netherlands) have now succeeded for the first time in observing spin waves in a bit consisting of only six atoms. INL hosted Spinograph Kick-off meeting and 1st Spinograph School

INL hosted the kick-off meeting for the Spinograph – Spintronics in Graphene project, a Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) providing state-of-the-art training for early-stage researchers (ESR) and Experienced Researchers (ER) in the field of Spintronics in Graphene. Seven partners from academia, including Nobel laureate Albert Fert, one of the discoverers of giant magnetoresistance, and three from the industry gathered in Braga (Portugal) to launch the 3,9M€ Project funded by the E.U. Marie Curie Actions and coordinated by INL. The kick-off meeting was followed by the first Spinograph School, providing training to the researchers hired through Spinograph as well as to a limited number of external students. Over 20 young researchers had the opportunity to attend lectures and interact with different experts in the fields of spintronics and graphene, coming from top research groups in US, UK, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Portugal. The topics included introductions to the electronic properties of graphene and graphene bilayers, and spin and pseudospin physics in graphene, the theory of Magnetism in graphene edges and defects, experimental techniques to probe magnetism and spin transport in graphene, Spin Hall physics as well as the properties of other two dimensional crystals.

INL strengthens collaborative ties with Argentine researchers

The governments of Argentina, Portugal and Spain signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen scientific and technical cooperation between the three countries in the area of nanotechnology. The objective is to develop joint projects in the area of nanotechnology and encourage the training of highly qualified human resources. The document will facilitate the access to Argentine institutions of science, technology and innovation, researchers, students and companies to the research facilities of the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory. The memorandum was signed by the Argentine Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Lino Barañao, the Portuguese Minister of Education and Science, Nuno Crato, and the Spanish Ambassador Eduardo Junco, representing the Spanish Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela, on March 11th in Lisbon.

Algerian Minister of Higher Education visited INL

The Algerian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mohamed Mebarki, accompanied by a group of representatives from Algerian Scientific and Educational Institutions, visited the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory to explore the opportunity to establish scientific cooperation. “This visit is an opportunity to attract talented Algerian students and researchers to work with us at INL“, said Paulo Freitas, deputy director of INL. “We can provide a state of the art facility and benefit from the specific knowledge and know-how that Algeria can provide as a result of its more developed sectors such as the natural gas industry“. The Spanish State Secretary for Research, Development and Innovation, also present during the event, considered the visit to be of “extraordinary importance”. Carmen Vela underlined the commitment of both INL funding countries, Portugal and Spain, towards its international nature. INL’s international dimension, “has to go beyond its written Statues and become effective through real collaborations with other countries“, added Carmen Vela. José Ferreira Gomes, Portuguese State Secretary for Higher Education, underlined the advantage of attracting foreign students and researchers to INL. “It is interesting for us to have young people developing their studies and research in our laboratories”.
